I recently finished reading the Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld. If you haven’t read it or heard about it, go find it. Then read, and fall in love. Through the course of three books (Leviathan, Behemoth, and Goliath) Scott Westerfeld tells the story of WWI with Steampunk.
The powers are divided between Darwinists and Clankers. The Clankers are what you should imagine when you hear the word Steampunk. They use steam and electric technology to build machines such as walkers and trains. These are the Central powers, like Germany.
Darwinists, on the other hand, use fabricated creatures to provide work beasts, ships, and vehicles. Their crowning achievement is the airship Leviathan, which was created from the life-threads of hundreds of creatures, including a whale. Their air balloons are made from jellyfish, and their weapons include fleschette bats, strafing hawks, and a kraken made from the life-threads of a giant squid.
So, there I was reading along, and a Darwinist character introduces a creature called a perspicacious loris. It perches on people’s shoulders and can imitate sounds, words, and even accents. I’m like:
I mean, there’s hundreds of fake creatures, like message frogs and hydrogen sniffing dogs. Then I was shown this video:
